I beg to ask the Postmaster-General whether authority has been given for the despatch of unestablished telegraph operators from one office to another in connection with events entailing a temporary increase of work; and, if so, whether such officers are entitled to subsistence allowances on the scale laid down in the rule to head postmasters, and, if not, will he state what allowances have been fixed, and what is the date of the authorisation.

I presume the hon. Member refers to assistants who are employed at certain offices to provide for temporary increase of work during the season months. In such cases the rate of pay is fixed so as to provide suitable remuneration, and no special allowances for subsistence are, as a rule, given
