HC Deb 14 May 1903 vol 122 c686
MR. SCHWANN (Manchester, N.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies, if he has yet received the report of the Inter-Colonial Conference that was held at Bloemfontein, and whether he will lay upon the Table of the House the proposals of the Transvaal Government with reference to the conditions of residence and trade of British Indian subjects.

THE POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Mr. AUSTEN CHAMBERLAIN,) Worcestershire, 687 E.

The right hon. Gentleman is unavoidably absent and has asked me to read his answer as follows—"I have received the report of the Inter-Colonial Conference at Bloemfontein, but the report makes no mention of any special proposals with reference to the conditions of residence and trade of British Indian subjects as having been put forward by the Transvaal Government. A despatch from Lord Milner dealing with the question of the position of the Asiatics in the Transvaal is on its way to me."
