HC Deb 11 May 1903 vol 122 c307
MR. SLOAN (Belfast, S.)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether he will explain why officers of the Royal Irish Constabulary have recently demanded the names and occupations of persons using motor cycles in Belfast.

MR. ATKINSON

Complaints have been made to the Belfast police that motor cycles were being driven at an excessive speed through the streets, and that the riders refused to stop when requested to do so. The police have taken the names of persons using these cycles in order to supply them with copies of the Regulations issued by the Local Government Board on the subject.

MR. SLOAN

The grievance is that the Royal Irish Constabulary make inquiries of people who have nothing whatever to do with the matter.

MR. ATKINSON

If these cycles are ridden at such a rapid rate it is the duty of the police to find out who are the riders.
