GEORGE BROWN (Edinburgh, Central)To ask the Secretary to the Treasury if he will state how many candidates passed the Civil Service examinations in 1902 as clerks of the second division and as female typists in Government departments respectively; and how many of the successful candidates of each class offered shorthand as one of their subjects.
(Answered by Mr. Arthur Elliot.)—Only one competition for the Second Division was held in 1902. At this 100 candidates were successful, and of these forty-six offered shorthand. There were also, in the course of the year, eleven men
