HC Deb 30 March 1903 vol 120 c578
MR. WILLIAM REDMOND

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether he is aware that the police recently tore down some placards, issued in reference to a meeting of labourers in the neighbourhood of Newmarket-on-Fergus, County Clare, and if he will say whether this was done with his sanction.

MR. WYNDHAM

The matter has not previously been brought to my notice. I am informed, however, that on the 20th instant the police removed some printed placards which referred to an individual as a "Tyrant." They removed one copy of another placard which was free from any such objectionable reference, and desisted from removing any more by order of the police sergeant.

MR. WILLIAM REDMOND

Will the right hon. Gentleman give instructions to the police in future not to remove placards of this nature?

MR. WYNDHAM

I understand that the inspector, directly he saw the one placard that had been removed, ordered the men not to pull down any others of that nature.
