HC Deb 22 July 1903 vol 125 c1433
MR. HERBERT ROBERTS (Denbighshire, W.)

To ask the Secretary of State for India whether he has received a reply to the inquiry which he addressed, in June last year, to the Government of India with reference to the location of the workhouse at Madras within the precincts of the Presidency Gaol; whether he has considered the representations made as to the results of such an arrangement; and whether he is in a position now to state the view of the Government of India upon the matter.

(Answered by Secretary Lord George Hamilton.) I have received the reply of the Government of India, and have given directions that persons detained under the European Vagrancy Act shall be accommodated in premises not forming part of the penitentiary.
