HC Deb 22 July 1903 vol 125 cc1432-3
MR. WEIR (Ross and Cromarty)

To ask the Secretary of State for India whether he is aware that in February, 1902, a Sirdar with about fifty coolies when travelling to a labour contractor was stopped by the police at Parbatipur Junction on the Eastern Bengal Railway, and not allowed to proceed until after he had telegraphed to the head of his firm, who approached the Assistant-General of Government Railway Police at Calcutta; is he aware that although the Sirdar had a pass for himself and coolies he was detained for two and a half days and required to pay money to the police; and will some inquiry be made on the subject by the Government of India.

(Answered by Secretary Lord George Hamilton.) I have no information on the subject. The matter should be represented to the local authorities.
