HC Deb 02 July 1903 vol 124 c1184
MR. CAWLEY (Lancashire, Prestwich)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that, owing to the reduction in the numbers of the South African Constabulary, men who enlisted in 1901 for three years have been dismissed with only the cost of their railway fare to Capetown; and whether, in view of the dissatisfaction existing among these men at this alleged breach of agreement he can give them some further compensation.

THE SECRETAEY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES (Mr. J. CHAMBERLAIN,) Birmingham, W.

I am not aware that any breach of agreement has occurred. The conditions of enlistment in the South African Constabulary of the men in question, specified that a noncommissioned officer or man was liable to discharge at any time by order of the Officer Commanding a Division.
