HC Deb 30 April 1903 vol 121 c951
Mr. CHARLES DEVLIN (Galway)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will state the nature of the objection taken by the Canadian Government to the selection of jurists made by the President of the United States to act on the Tribunal appointed for the adjustment of the boundary between the Dominion of Canada and the Territory of Alaska; and what action, if any, has been taken.

MR. J. CHAMBERLAIN

The Dominion Government took exception to the jurists selected by the United States on the ground that they did not come within the description of persons specified in Article I. of the Treaty. The Treaty was ratified before the official announcement of the names of the American representatives was received. The Canadian Government, while protesting against the selection, agreed to nominate two representatives, and asked His Majesty's Government to secure, if possible, the services of the Lord Chief Justice as the third representative. No other action has been taken.
