HC Deb 22 April 1903 vol 121 cc112-3
MR. LOUGH (Islington, W.)

I beg to ask Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer how many additional persons have been employed by the Customs since the introduction of the sugar tax and the corn tax, and what additional expense has their employment involved.

THE FINANCIAL SECRETARY TO THE TREASURY (Mr. ELLIOT, Durham)

I have to state on behalf of my right hon. friend that it is difficult to separate the increased staff required for the sugar tax from the increase rendered necessary by the simultaneous imposition of the coal duties. The introduction of these two duties, together with the corn duties, involved an increase of 444 persons, and an additional expense for pay and allowances, travelling, clothing, and law charges of£57,600 per annum.
