I beg to ask Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer if he can state under what authority revenue officers demand from public companies any further information than the names and residences of persons in their employment liable to be assessed for Income Tax.

Information as to salaries paid by public companies to their employees is requested (not demanded) in accordance with standing instructions from the Board of Inland Revenue. The practice is of very long standing, and is considered to be in the interest of all parties concerned. But, as was stated in reply to the hon. Member's previous Quest ion (18th November), the information is not pressed for, if any objection to giving it is raised
