§ MR. WEIR (Ross and Cromarty)To ask the Lord Advocate, in view of the fact that the Crown property in Scotland is stated to produce an income of £30,789 15s. 1d., and that arrears at the close of the year 1901–2 amounted to £4,822 11s. 4d., will he state the nature of the subjects in respect of which these arrears fell due; and whether any steps have been taken to recover them.
(Answered by Mr. Hayes Fisher.) Of the entire sum outstanding, £4,433 is in respect of surplus teinds of Elgin parish claimed by the Crown in respect of crops 1856–1876 (first half), for which the heritors dispute their liability. The claim is in abeyance pending the adjustment of a final locality which will it is expected, make clear the rights of the parties. The balance consists of various items of small amount which are being dealt with. I may add that all arrears are fully investigated after the close of each financial year and any necessary steps then taken.
