HC Deb 10 November 1902 vol 114 c459
MR. TULLY

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether his attention has been directed to the occurrences at Lewes, and especially at Borough, Cliffe, Commercial Square, and Southover, on the 5th November last; and whether any complaint has been received from the Roman Catholic inhabitants of those districts as to the treatment which they received on that occasion.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. AKERS DOUGLAS, Kent, St. Augustine's)

The answer to both Questions is in the negative.

Mr. TULLY (Leitrim, S.)

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that, according to the local paper, the effigy of His Highness the Pope was burnt?

MR. AKERS DOUGLAS

That is not a matter for the Department; it is one for the local police to deal with.
