I beg to ask the Secretary of State for War whether he can state how many horses were registered when the war in South Africa broke out under a liability to be acquired at certain fixed prices for war purposes; what was the total amount of fees paid to the owners of these horses; and how many of these horses have been acquired † See (4) Debates, ciii., 1273. by the Government for remount purposes in South Africa.

The number registered when the war broke out was 14,550, for each of which ten shillings was paid per annum. The number of registered horses purchased for service in South Africa was 6,350.
