To ask the Secretary of State for War if he will furnish a reply to the protest, dated 14th September 1899, addressed to the War Office for consideration of the Treasury, by an abstractor clerk against the decision of the Treasury, which would bring him under the Order in Council of 29th November 1898: And, seeing that this abstractor clerk has been, notwithstanding that appeal, compulsorily retired at sixty, with less than forty years service, on £33, 1s. 7d. a year payable for three years out of a gratuity of £100 earned by temporary service, and surrendered on appointment to the established Civil Service, will he inquire into this case.

(Answer.) The application of Orders in Council to abstractors has been fully explained to the hon. Member. The case of the clerk in question was fully considered prior to his retirement.—(War Office.)
