I beg to ask the First Lord of the Treasury whether he is aware that the directors of the observatories at Ben Nevis and Fort William have decided to close them in October next, on account of their inability to maintain them without assistance from the State; and, in view of the value of these observatories in connection with the study of meteorology, will he say whether he can arrange for their whole or partial maintenance.

I can only refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave yesterday on this subject. I may, however, add that the Vote which covers this matter was taken on June 12th. It has yet to be reported.
