HC Deb 20 January 1902 vol 101 cc294-5
(3.30.) MR. JAMES O'KELLY (Roscommon, N.)

I beg to ask the First Lord of the Treasury, whether His Majesty's Government will take steps to induce Canada, Australia, and other parts of the Empire to pay up their share of the cost of the South African War.

THE FIRST LORD OF THE TREASURY (Mr. A. J. BALFOUR,) Manchester, E.

His Majesty's Government gratefully aeknowledge the contribution in men and money already made voluntarily by Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and other parts of the Empire. As to the Question of the hon. Gentleman, it seems to me to contain a quite uncalled for imputation on the loyal populations in all parts of His Majesty's dominions, and to be expressed in quite unnecessarily offensive language.

MR. WILLIAM REDMOND (Clare, E.)

Arising out of the statement of the right hon. Gentleman, may I ask him if he is in a position to say exactly what is the amount of money voted by the Colonies for the war—

* MR. SPEAKER

Order, Order,

MR. WILLIAM REDMOND

Why should not Australia pay as well as Ireland?
