HC Deb 20 May 1901 vol 94 c606
MR. JOHN ELLIS

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether he is in a position to state the total population of Ireland at the recent census.

MR. WYNDHAM

The population was 4,456,546. These figures show, I regret to say, a decrease of 5.3 per cent. as compared with the population in 1891. But the decrease for the previous decade was 9.08 per cent., and the number of emigrants for the last decade was 50 per cent. lower than the number in the preceding decade.

MR. PATRICK O'BRIEN (Kilkenny)

Do you propose to alter the policy in Ireland which has caused this decrease of population?

MR. WYNDHAM

We are making every effort in that direction.
