HC Deb 10 May 1901 vol 93 cc1322-3
CAPTAIN NORTON (Newington, W.)

I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury whether he can state the names of the various offices in which senior assistant clerks have been promoted to be second division clerks under Clause 15 of the Order in Council of November, 1898, and the number of such promotions in each office.

THE FINANCIAL SECRETARY TO THE TREASURY (Mr. AUSTEN CHAMBERLAIN, Worcestershire, E.)

The total number of assistant clerks so promoted up to the 8th instant is seventy-two. The cases of five other candidates for promotion are still in the hands of the Civil Service Commissioners. It would not be possible to state the numbers promoted in the several offices within the usual limits of an answer, but I shall be happy to give the information privately to the hon. and gallant Member if he desires it.
