HC Deb 09 May 1901 vol 93 c1144
SIR ROBERT GUNTER (Yorkshire, W.R., Barkston Ash)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for War whether, in cases where militiamen in South Africa die from enteric fever, and their kits are burned by order, any compensation will be given to the widow or next-of-kin.

LORD STANLEY

Compensation in kind or money for losses incurred on service is only granted for the purpose of enabling the officers or men who have lost their equipment through unavoidable causes to re-equip themselves for further service, and cannot therefore be regarded as an asset of the estate.
