HC Deb 03 May 1901 vol 93 c607
MR. O'DOHERTY

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether, in view of the fact that 95 per cent. of the population of the county of Donegal are Roman Catholics, the Government will appoint a Roman Catholic to the existing vacancy in the Clerkship of the Peace of said county.

MR. ATKINSON

The question of uniting the vacant office with the clerkship of the Crown, under the provisions of the County Officers Act of 1877, is now under consideration; such appointments are regulated by considerations of competence and not of religion.
