HC Deb 02 May 1901 vol 93 c411
*MR. M'CRAE (Edinburgh, E.)

I beg to ask Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he can state the amount of expenditure incurred on account of the war in South Africa to 31st March, 1901, exclusive of the charge for interest; and the total charge for interest on loans and other borrowings for war expenditure in South Africa to 31st March, 1901; and whether he can state the respective amounts of war expenditure in South Africa redeemed to 31st March, 1901, from the following sources, namely, from taxation apart from realised surpluses; from realised surpluses; and from suspension of the Sinking Fund.

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (Sir M. HICKS BEACH, Bristol, W.)

I would ask the hon. Member to wait for the Return granted on Tuesday last on the motion of the hon. Member for the Poplar Division, which will contain the information he desires.

*MR. M'CRAE

That Return is, I believe, in different terms. Will it distinguish between the expenditure for war and the charge for interest, including interest on deficiency borrowings?

SIR M. HICKS BEACH

The hon. Member had better wait till he sees the Return.
