HC Deb 02 May 1901 vol 93 cc443-4
MR. SAMUEL YOUNG

I beg to ask Mr. Attorney General for Ireland whether he is aware that, on estates in county Cavan and elsewhere in Ireland it is the practice when a tenant serves an originating notice for the landlord to issue process for arrears and for hanging gale with a view of forcing settlement; and whether, in view of the character of such proceedings, he will state whether there is any method by which such proceedings may be stayed pending adjudication on the fair rent application.

THE ATTORNEY GENERAL FOR IRELAND (Mr. ATKINSON, Londonderry, N.)

I am unable to state from the information I have received whether the practice alleged exists. There is no method by which a tenant serving a notice to have his rent fixed can relieve himself from paying his rent beyond that which is provided in the 13th section of the Act of 1881.
