HC Deb 16 August 1901 vol 99 cc1159-60
MR. ORMSBY-GORE (Lincolnshire, Gainsborough)

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Agriculture, having regard to the fact that the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease has now ceased in Argentina for over nine months, and in view of the measures adopted by the Argentine Government against the importation of British pedigree cattle into Argentina, whether there is any prospect of this regulation being rescinded or a short period of quarantine being substituted in the near future, and whether his attention has been called to the effect of the dislocation of the trade of farmers and breeders of pedigree cattle with Argentina in agricultural districts throughout the country.

MR. HANBURY

The evidence before me does not support the statement in the first part of the question. I shall be glad to show the hon. Member that evidence. I do not see why the export trade in pedigree cattle from this country to Argentina should be affected by the existence or non-existence of the disease there.
