HC Deb 30 April 1901 vol 93 cc252-3
MR. FLYNN (Cork, N.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India whether he has any information showing Ahmednagar to be an unhealthy station for European troops, and that troops stationed there have suffered from enteric fever; and, if so, will the captured Boer prisoners be deported to some more healthy part of India.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA (Lord G. HAMILTON, Middlesex, Ealing)

The viceroy reports to me as follows:— There is no foundation for rumours about unhealthiness of Ahmednagar. The rate of admission to hospital per thousand is actually less than that of Kasauli, Ranikhet, and Dalhousie, all of which are hill stations occupied by British troops; and is approximately the same as in Poona and Umballa, where British troops are stationed throughout the summer. In these circumstances I see no reason for altering the arrangements which have been made.
