HC Deb 29 April 1901 vol 93 c38
MR. CLAUDE LOWTHER (Cumberland, Eskdale)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for War if he can state how many of the first 10,000 Yeomen who were despatched to South Africa are at present serving in that country; I beg also to ask the Secretary of State for War whether he can state the number of Yeomanry, Militia, and Volunteers, respectively, other than invalids, who have returned from service in South Africa, and to what extent they have been replaced by further drafts from home.

LORD STANLEY

In reply to these questions I can only give a rough estimate of the figures. Between 3,500 and 4,000 Militiamen have returned, and about 3,500 have been sent out in drafts. About 4,000 Yeomen have returned, and about 16,500 have been sent out in drafts. About 3,500 Volunteers have returned, and about 6,800 have been sent out in their places. Other Volunteers are about to embark for home. About 6,000 of the original Yeomen still remain in the country.
