MR. NEWDIGATE (Warwickshire, Nuneaton)I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he can give the name of the Englishman married to a Dutch wife, and lately living in the Karee district of the Orange Free State, who was shot by the Boers in March last in the presence of his family; and whether he has any information to the effect that other cases of shooting persons of British extraction by the Boers have recently occurred in the Orange Free State.
§ THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES (Mr. J. CHAMBERLAIN, Birmingham, W.)In reply to the first paragraph, I have to say that I have no information as to the case referred to, but I will make inquiry. Previous reported instances of the shooting of persons of British extraction in cold blood in the Orange Free State have been shown to be untrue.
