HC Deb 23 March 1900 vol 81 c172
MR. SWIFT MACNEILL

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for War why is Colonel Gough, who was in command of his regiment at Magersfontein, not still in command of his regiment at the front; is Colonel Gough's absence from the field owing to the action of Lord Methuen; and what are the circumstances that have led to the temporary loss of the services of this distinguished officer.

*MR. WYNDHAM

Colonel Gough's period of command expired on the 15th March. His absence from the field previous to that date was due to the action of Lord Methuen. I informed the honourable Member yesterday* that an inquiry would be held so soon as the necessary witnesses are available.
