ALFEED HUTTONI beg to ask the Vice-President of the Committee of Council on Education if he will state what has been the average cost of maintenance in denominational schools for the years 1895–1900; also what has been the amount stated in the audited accounts of Voluntary schools to have been paid for rent during the years in which the audit has been operative.
§ SIR JOHN GORSTFrom 1895 the average cost has been £1 18s. 11¼d., £1 19s. 6¾d., £2 0s. 6d., £2 2s. 4¾d., £2 5s. 1¼d., and£2.6s. 4¼d. The amounts stated to have been paid for rent in the two years for which audit has been compulsory are £111,465 1s. 8d. and £112,964 13s. 7d.
