HC Deb 10 February 1899 vol 66 cc679-80
GENERAL RUSSELL (Cheltenham)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India whether the Government have come to any decision regarding the repayment of their travelling expenses to officers who were on leave at home on the recent outbreak of hostilities on the North-West Frontier of India, and who were obliged to rejoin their regiments and to take part in the campaign?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA (Lord GEORGE HAMILTON,) Middlesex, Ealing

It has been decided to maintain the rule under which passages are granted only to those officers who are recalled from leave by the Govern- ment of India or the Commander-in-Chief in India. As regards officers who rejoined their regiments from leave during the recent campaign in India, the Commander-in-Chief has been asked to represent any specific case which he deems deserving of special consideration.
