HC Deb 09 June 1898 vol 58 cc1176-7
MR. LYTTELTON (Warwick and Leamington)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is in a position to lay upon the Table the Report of Miss Patterson and Miss Deane, referred to in his answer to a deputation on 19th May?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT

It is contrary to all practice to publish departmental reports of this character. They must necessarily contain information and observations about individual firms of a confidential character, and their object would be frustrated if they were habitually made public.

SIR C. DILKE (Gloucestershire, Forest of Dean)

Would it not be possible to publish the general portions of the reports and extracts without giving the confidential parts?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT

I shall be prepared to consider if that can be done, but I do not personally think it a satisfactory way of dealing with the matter.
