§ MR. H. C. F. LUTTRELL (Devon, Tavistock)I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether the recommendations made by the Prison Commissioners last year concerning the warders in prisons, to which he made reference on 10th August 1896 in a speech in this House, had received the assent of the Treasury; and whether he was in a position to hold out hope of some amelioration of their terms of superannuation?
§ SIR MATTHEW WHITE RIDLEYNo, Sir; the Treasury declined to assent to the recommendations of the Commissioners. A further communication from the Commissioners is under consideration, but I cannot go so far as to hold out much hope of the improvement which the warders desire.
