HC Deb 17 February 1893 vol 8 cc1701-2
SIR FREDERICK DIXON-HARTLAND (Middlesex, Uxbridge)

I beg to ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether any instructions have been given to the collectors of Income Tax to press for the payment of Income Tax under threats of distraint warrants, or whether payment before the 5th April will be accepted without legal proceedings; and whether such collectors who have given notices of immediate distraint will be so instructed?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (Sir W. HARCOURT,) Derby

No special instructions whatever have been issued to the collectors of Income Tax with regard to the payment of the duty for the current year. The tax, however, is by law due and payable on or before January 1, and I cannot interfere with the collectors in the discharge of their legal duties.
