HC Deb 11 June 1888 vol 326 c1690
MR. COCHRANE-BAILLIE (St. Pancras, N.)

asked the hon. Member for the Knutsford. Division of Cheshire, Whether, previous to the recent re-building of Long's Hotel, the Metropolitan Board of Works took the opportunity of endeavouring to secure the much needed widening of Bond Street?

MR. TATTON EGERTON (Cheshire, Knutsford)

In reply to the hon. Member, I have to state that the Board did not take any steps with a view to the widening of Bond Street before the re-building of Long's Hotel. If, when a building is pulled down for the purpose of being rebuilt, the Local Authority is of opinion that the opportunity should be taken to set the building back, and thus widen the street, the practice is for the Authority to make a representation to that effect to the Board, and to ask the Board to contribute half the cost of the ground to be given up. No such representation was made to the Board in the case referred to in the Question.
