HC Deb 21 March 1882 vol 267 c1440
MR. SEXTON (for Mr. DAWSON)

asked the President of the Board of Trade, If it is the case that advertisements for the requirements of the English lighthouse service are not published in the Irish papers, whereas those for the Irish service are advertised in the English and Scotch papers; and, if contractors from Ireland who contract for work for England are required by the Trinity House to have manufactories in that Country, whilst no such condition for work for Ireland is imposed on English contractors?

MR. CHAMBERLAIN

, in reply, said, he was informed that the Irish Board did not advertise their ordinary requirements in the English and Scotch papers; but that when they were inviting tenders for the annual supply of coal and oil, and for the construction of a lightship, they did advertise in the Scotch and English as well as in the Irish papers. The English Board did not advertise in the Scotch, English, or Irish papers as such; but they advertised in the papers most likely to meet the requirements, such as The Engineer, Builder's Review, &c, which circulated throughout the United Kingdom. As regarded the second Question, he was informed that in no case in Ireland or England had such a condition been imposed.
