HC Deb 21 March 1882 vol 267 cc1439-40
MR. LABOUCHERE

asked the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies, Whether he has received information that the New Zealand constabulary has lately been employed to destroy the growing crops of the Maories; and, if so, whether he intends to take any official notice of these acts?

MR. COURTNEY

, in reply, said, that the Colonial Office had no official information on the subject; but he found, from private sources, that something of the kind was done in respect of about 40 acres of Maori crops. Of course, the action of the Constabulary of New Zealand was under the direction of the New Zealand Government, which was responsible to the New Zealand Parliament.
