§ Mr. WaldegraveIn the financial year 1979–80, the latest year for which comparable information is available, current expenditure amounted to about £2,500 per advanced level student in the polytechnics and £3,200 in the universities. These figures exclude externally funded research, but include internally funded research, which is not separately quantifiable. They reflect the differing range of subjects in the two types of institution, including, for example, the concentration of higher-cost subjects, such as medicine and veterinary science, in the universities.
