HC Deb 31 July 1974 vol 878 c246W
Mr. Pink

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the latest position regarding mutual recognition of degrees and diplomas by member countries of the EEC.

Mr. Gerry Fowler

At a meeting on 6th June last Ministers of Education of the European Communities adopted a resolution on mutual recognition of professional qualifications under Article 57 of the Treaty of Rome. This provides that directives under Article 57 should resort as little as possible to the prescription of detailed training criteria and that advisory committtees might be set up for different professions. Future arrangements for discussions on draft directives affecting individual professions will continue to be a matter for Government Departments most closely concerned. Mutual recognition of academic qualifications is a subject which the Ministers agreed might be included in possible co-operation in the field of education.
