§ Mr. Pinkasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what will be the British contribution to the agreement whereby this country joins the Franco-German nuclear research institute of Grenoble.
§ Mr. Gerry FowlerUnder the terms of the intergovernmental agreement concerning participation by the Science Research Council (SRC) in the high flux neutron beam facilities at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) at Grenoble, the SRC is responsible for 33 per cent. of the net operating costs of the ILL, involving expenditure by the council of about £2 million a year at current prices and exchange rates. The SRC is also contributing about £1 million a year—in real terms—for 10 years towards the capital cost of the reactor and a total of about £700,000 over three years towards other capital assets. In return the SRC secures a full part in the management of the ILL, access for British scientists to ILL facilities on equal terms with French and German scientists, a fair share of posts for British personnel and an opportunity to win some contracts for the United Kingdom.
