HC Deb 21 September 1909 vol 11 c390W
Mr. O'DOHERTY

asked the Chief Secretary whether a man who is refused an old age pension on the ground that his wife was receiving indoor relief in a workhouse is still to be refused a pension after the death of his wife, he being otherwise qualified?

Mr. BIRRELL

The reply to this question is in the affirmative. Under Section 3 (1) (a) of the Old Age Pension Act, 1908, a person is disqualified from receiving a pension if he has received ordinary poor relief since 1st January, 1908, and this disqualification extends until 31st December, 1910, unless Parliament otherwise determines. Such disqualification also extends to the receipt of ordinary poor relief by any person dependent on the claimant for a pension. The death of such dependent would not, therefore, remove the disqualification.
