HC Deb 22 October 1984 vol 65 cc429-30
23. Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the hon. Member for Wokingham, as representing the Church Commissioners, what plans the commissioners have to introduce private participation in any matter within their responsibilities.

Sir William van Straubenzee

The work of the commissioners already involves much private participation, both professional and lay. For example, in recent years, church people have much increased their financial support for the work of the parochial clergy.

Mr. Bruinvels

I thank my hon. Friend for that answer. It is a matter of record that participation by members of the public at local churches has been diminishing over the years. In Leicestershire, for instance, out of a population of 880,000, fewer than 65,000 now attend. It would be helpful if further encouragement could be given and if, perhaps, small and local businesses could contribute to the funds of the churches.

Sir William van Straubenzee

I am receptive to any of my hon. Friend's ideas on this matter. He should be a little careful about attendances, as many more people still go to church on Sundays than go to football matches on Saturdays.
