§ 24. Mr. Greenwayasked the hon. Member for Wokingham, as representing the Church Commissioners, what contributions the Church Commissioners make towards the cost of running the General Synod; and if he will make a statement.
§ Sir William van StraubenzeeThe commissioners make no direct contribution.
§ Mr. GreenwayAre not bishops and clergy, who are members of the General Synod, paid by the Church Commissioners? Will my hon. Friend ensure that no Church Commissioners' funds are used to finance expenses that arise from the heretical activities of some bishops?
§ Sir William van StraubenzeeNo member of the General Synod is, by virtue of his membership, paid by the Church Commissioners. The clergy members and bishop members are, of course, paid by the commissioners. I note my hon. Friend's point. I hope he will remember that there are 43 diocesan bishops. It is a little unhappy to fasten on the activities of only one.
