HC Deb 22 March 1984 vol 56 cc1171-2
20. Mr. Latham

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he will make a statement on the security situation.

Mr. Prior

I refer my hon. Friend to the answer that I gave the right hon. Member for Lagan Valley (Mr. Molyneaux) earlier today.

Mr. Latham

Following an answer that he gave me the other day, will my right hon. Friend confirm that, despite rumours to the contrary, the Ulster Defence Regiment has an important and continuing role to play in security in Northern Ireland?

Mr. Prior

Yes, Sir. I would like to make it absolutely clear that the UDR has an important role to play in the security of Northern Ireland. The whole House, I think, warmly applauds the bravery and courage that its members have shown in carrying out their duties.

Mr. A. Cecil Walker

In view of the recent developments in conection with the McConnell murder, is the Secretary of State satisfied with the vetting procedure for civil servants employed on the security side of the Civil Service?

Mr. Prior

This is a matter that needs to be kept under constant revision. Generally speaking I am satisfied, but obviously we must look at our procedures again.
