HC Deb 09 November 1976 vol 919 cc373-4
Mr. Evelyn King (Dorset, South)

With your permission, Mr. Speaker, and that of the House, I beg leave to present a petition signed by 5,000 persons, all coming from the Island and Royal Manor of Portland. The Petitioners have asked that the Wessex Water Board withdraw the sewerage scheme to dispose untreated effluent from Weymouth and District into Chesil Bay. Whilst they recognise the need for a new sewerage lay-out for the area they object to the proposed point of disposal and request the Board to: Investigate and install modern and progressive methods of disposal to avoid pollution of the sea by untreated sewage, detergents and other chemicals. and to Consider provision of an inland sewage farm, or suitable method of sewage recovery, rather than sewage disposal. The Petitioners believe that mass dumping of detergents … into the sea could deprive local fishermen of their livelihood, and that expensive tunnelling under the Chesil Bank and subsequent costly main- tenance in the notoriously 'Rough Weather Bay' could be prohibitive. The Petitioners pray that your Honourable House will do all in its power to ensure that the Wessex Water Board act as your Petitioners wish.

To lie upon the Table.
