HC Deb 21 April 1975 vol 890 c1197
Mr. Arthur Davidson

I beg to move Amendment No. 1 in page 15, line 42, leave out "28A of the Solicitors Act 1957", and insert 45 of the Solicitors Act 1974 ".

The Chairman

I think that with this amendment it might be convenient to take also Amendment No. 2.

Mr. Davidson

I agree Sir Myer. Both amendments reflect the coming into operation on 1st May this year of the Solicitors Act 1974. Perhaps I may briefly explain the background.

Under Schedule 2 to the Solicitors (Amendment) Act 1974, the lay observer was established. While that Bill was going through the House the Solicitors Act 1974, which was itself a consolidation measure, was also going through the House. The Solicitors (Amendment) Act included provision for a lay observer to be inserted into the Solicitors Act 1957 and the House of Commons Disqualification Act 1957. It is now necessary to take account of the passing of the Solicitors Act 1974. That is the purpose of the amendments.
