HC Deb 31 July 1974 vol 878 cc771-2
4. Mr. Galbraith

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the timetable for the construction of the underpasses proposed for Great Western Road, Glasgow.

Mr. Millan

As my noble Friend the Minister of State has already indicated to the hon. Gentleman by letter, my right hon. Friend is not in a position to comment on this, as no firm proposals for the construction of underpasses at Great Western Road have been submitted to him by Glasgow Corporation.

Mr. Galbraith

When coming to a decision, will the hon. Gentleman bear in mind the strong local feeling against underpasses and, indeed, the whole disastrous and unnecessary scheme for dualling this road? Does he see his right hon. Friend in the rôle of Prince Charming, the protector of beauty against the many rapes being perpetrated upon the Great Western Road and many other parts of Glasgow?

Mr. Millan

My right hon. Friend fulfils many rôles and I dare say he can add that to his list. I am aware of the local feeling and this is one of the matters to be taken into account. However, we have not yet had proposals from the corporation.
