§ 32. Mr. Kinnockasked the Secretary of State for Wales what discussions he has had with the National Coal Board about the future of the coal industry in Wales; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. RowlandsMy right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Energy and my right hon. and learned Friend are closely in touch with the National Coal Board about the future of the coal industry in Wales.
§ Mr. KinnockIs my hon. Friend aware of the bad effect of recent rumour-mongering about the future of the coal industry in Wales and Scotland on recruitment in the industry and on morale? Is he aware that the effect of such rumour-mongering will be exceeded only by the effects of the projected closure of collieries, most notably Ogilvie Colliery in the constituency of Caerphilly? Is he aware that my hon. Friend the Member for Caerphilly (Mr. Evans), the local authorities and the National Union of Mineworkers will be spearheading a campaign to keep that colliery open?
§ Mr. RowlandsI am aware of the situation in regard to Ogilvie Colliery. I am glad to take this opportunity to refute 769 totally the irresponsible suggestions made recently in the Press that there is to be a wholesale rundown of certain coalfields. It is utter nonsense, as was made clear by the Area Director of the National Coal Board.
