HC Deb 08 March 1973 vol 852 c570
2. Mr. Norman Lamont

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if full visiting by officials of the Ministry of Health and Social Services and Supplementary Benefits Commission is being made in the former No-go areas of Belfast and Londonderry.

The Under-Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (Mr. Peter Mills)

Yes, Sir. Full visiting services were restored in these areas within a few weeks of Operation Motorman at the end of July.

Mr. Lamont

Is my hon. Friend aware that that is a very encouraging reply? In the appointment of officials to deal with particular areas, is it necessary to pay attention to the religious background of those officials?

Mr. Mills

We should congratulate these visitors on the difficult job that they are doing. I am happy to say that it has not been found necessary to select staff on a denominational basis. Official visitors make these visits regardless of religious boundaries.
