HC Deb 08 March 1973 vol 852 cc570-1
6. Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will consider ending at an early date the Army occupation of Casement Park.

The Minister of State for Northern Ireland (Mr. David Howell)

It is necessary on security grounds for the Army to remain in the park, but the matter is under constant review.

Mr. Parry

Does not the hon. Gentleman agree that anything that can be done to encourage the cultural and sporting activities in Northern Ireland would help in the present climate? Does he not further agree that the early ending of the occupation would help towards this end?

Mr. Howell

I certainly agree with the first proposition. As to the second, we shall be glad when the time comes when we can withdraw from Casement Park, but this must depend on the security situation there, and that, as I say, is under constant review.
