asked the Secretary of State for Wales what is the number of projects for replacement of primary schools in Wales in the 1974–75 programme and the comparable figures for 1969–70 and 1972–73.

Mr. Gibson-Watt

The most recent programme relates to starts in 1973–74. This includes 41 projects for the replacement of old primary schools, compared with 38 in the 1972–73 and five in the 1969–70 programmes.

Mr. Edwards

I welcome the notable improvements on the dismal performance of the previous Government in this respect. Will my hon. Friend indicate how long it will be before he expects to have rebuilt most of the oldest and inadequate primary schools still left?

Mr. Gibson-Watt

I am grateful to my hon. Friend for his recognition of the great improvements in this programme. It is hoped that the total programme will be completed by about 1977.

Will the Minister of State give comparable figures for nursery school places in Wales, and will he acknowledge that if his Government——
